Scientific Name: Nyctanthes arbor-tristis (Night-Flowering Jasmine)
Gujarati Name: Parijat
Hindi Name: Harsingar

Nyctanthes arbor-tristis (Indian night Jasmine) is a shrub or small tree. Highly fragrant flowers are produced in abundance on this Southeast Asian plant. 

It has produced small start shaped blooms that are white orange centers and smell like honey. 

The Flowers open at night and fall by the next morning but the profusion of bloom is so abundant that they are hardly ever without a flower during their blooming cycle. 

These flowers blossom between August to December.

The flower is called Jharaa sephali in Odisha, Shiuli in West Bengal and Parijat in Gujarat. 

The flower is also called as Raat ki raani (Queen of the Night).

The tree is sometimes called the "tree of sorrow", because the flowers lose their brightness during daytime; the scientific name arbor-tristis also means "sad tree".

Medicinal Properties of the Parijat:

Parijat leaves, flower and seeds are used as medicine. Extract of the Seeds, leaves, and flowers possesses Immunostimulant, Hepatoprotective, Antileishmanial, Antiviral and Antifungal activities in vitro.

The Leaves have been used in Ayurvedic medicine and Homeopathy for Sciatica, Arthritis, Fevers, and as a Laxative.

The Flower have been used in ophthalmic diseases and as Carminative.

It is used in obstinate remittent fever, sciatica, and rheumatism. Because of mild purgative in nature it is very useful in constipation of children. 

It is used in treatment of bronchitis and also as an antidote to snake bite.
