INTRODUCTION OF BOTANY
Botany
as a subject is related to the study
of the plants.
In this subject you have to study in deep about Structure of plant between different group, Life of plant, Plant diseases, growth, development etc. The
term “Botany” is derived from Greek noun ‘Botane’ which means herb and it’s a
branch of science study especially in Bachelor of Science. Botany
is one of the world’s oldest natural science.
Initially,
Botany included all the plant like organisms such as algae, Lichens, Fungi,
Bryophytes (Mosses), Pteridophytes (Ferns) along with actual plants.
The
Greek scientist Theophrastus
was one of the early botanist of the world. He
is also known as the “father
of Botany”. One of his writing a book "Enquiry into plants" classified the plants based on geographical ranges, sizes, uses and growth pattern.
CAREER SCOPE AND OBJECTIVE
A
career in Botany might just be one of the most preferred careers in India.
When
planning a career in Botany, the job profile can include study of plants,
research, working with industries, teaching, self employment, and being a part
of many more fields. A
person who works in this field is called a Botanist.
It
will be the job of the botanist to study plant life along with finding
solutions to problems related to that of forest and agriculture.
There are also botanists who deal with space travel agriculture, artificial environments, hydroponics and various other interesting areas of research.
Plants are the major source of life on earth. They provide us with food, oxygen, medicine, fuel and a variety of raw materials for various industrial and domestic purposes.
Plants absorb carbon dioxide through photosynthesis which affects our environment and sometime higher percentage of it can cause drastic changes in global climate.
As with other life forms in biology, plant life can be studied from different perspective. The molecular, genetic and biochemical level through organelles, cells, tissues, organs, individuals plant population and plant communities.
At each of these levels a botanist might be concerned with the Classification (Taxonomy), Structure (morphology and Anatomy), or Function (Physiology) of plant life.
A good understanding of plants is crucial to the future of human societies as it allows us to:
- Produce food to feed an expanding population.
- Understand fundamental life processes.
- Produce medicine and materials to treat diseases and other ailments.
- Understand environmental changes more clearly.
